Groede, an artists' village

Groede is well known for its links with art and is home to dozens of artists, so it’s worth your while visiting some of the exhibitions. The works of various artists can be seen at Galerie Groede and in summer, the old church in the village, Grote Kerk Groede, hosts art exhibitions too.

No one should come to Groede without trying out the Groese paptaart, a pastry delicacy with a custard filling. It’s not known how this custard tart found its way to Groede, but one thing’s for sure, it’s extremely yummy!

Statesman and famous poet Jacob Cats (1577-1660) left his mark on the landscape around Groede, in the main flood defence and land reclamation schemes.  A 10-kilometre hiking trail has been created to help you explore this unique, historic landscape: Droge voeten door Jacob Cats trail, literally the ‘Jacob Cats’ dry feet trail’

What to do in Groede

Het Vlaemsche Erfgoed museum

The picturesque houses and their gables in the village centre are a poignant reminder of its Flemish heritage. Het Vlaemsche Erfgoed, in Slijkstraat, is not so much a museum as a celebration of this rich cultural past. The street has an array of small shops and traditional workshops, as well as Hotel Groede, a hostelry where you can savour the special atmosphere of Groede overnight.

Groede Podium

Groede Podium is a free playground and bunker park in Groede. Not only can kids let their hair down, they can also learn more about the Second World War. In 1942, Groede became an integral part of Hitler’s coastal defence project, known as the Atlantikwall. Nearby is the Groese Polders nature reserve, with some fine walking trails and attractions along the way for children.

Waterdunen

Groede has some excellent cycling and walking trails in the vicinity, both along the coast and inland. Close to Groede is the Waterdunen nature reserve, a birdspotters’ paradise in a landscape which has been shaped by the ebb and flow of the tide. There are various trails in Waterdunen and walks can also be arranged with a guide.

Brouwerslokaal

Brouwerslokaal is a micro brewery which not only sells beer, but fresh local dishes too. The brewery and tap room are located in the old school house where you can watch the craft beer being made whilst enjoying some fine Zeeland fare.
