The only Flemish clock tower (‘belfort’) in the Netherlands is situated in the centre of Sluis. Nowadays, the Belfort houses a museum and exhibition space. And of course, it’s fun for children too! Visiting the town hall cellar, the council chamber and the mayoral office is like travelling back in time. You can also climb the belfry and enjoy breathtaking views of the town and surrounding countryside. Riding the Goes-Borsele railway is experiencing history at first hand, as it speeds its way along: the steam engine whistles, the fireman is blackened by soot and the ticket collector comes along and clips your ticket. The station at Hoedekenskerke has all sorts of activities for children, including a playground, an old hawker’s stall and a miniature railway. All aboard!

The Fisheries Museum in Breskens recalls the lives of fishermen working at sea. The tales of ordinary fisherfolk, their boats, their fishing tackle and their catches are told by way of an informative film. Children can learn how to knit nets and tie knots. Or stand eyeball to eyeball with creatures of the ocean in the aquarium, such as sharks, flatfish, crabs, prawns, starfish and lobsters.

The war years are visualised, for example, by means of a Bailey bridge, roadblocks, Sherman tanks and a well-preserved temporary church dating from this period.
