Located on the Oosterschelde estuary, Wemeldinge is a popular (holiday) destination, particularly for watersports enthusiasts. This Zeeland village has an attractive marina, quite a few shops and welcoming restaurants. Please read on if you want to know more about Wemeldinge!
Wemeldinge, village on the Oosterschelde
Wemeldinge is on the Oosterschelde, a saltwater lagoon which forms the largest national park in the Netherlands. The village is particularly famous for its diving sites. The website duikersgids.nl provides information about the best diving locations in Wemeldinge. Are you more of a landlubber? Why not try out the beach at Wemeldinge.
Of course, located on the edge of Oosterschelde it’s no wonder that Wemeldinge has some magnificent fish restaurants. You can find them throughout the village, in the attractive yachting marina or the main village street.
Protected conservation area
Wemeldinge’s main street, Dorpsstraat, is a protected conservation area. The street, lined with espaliered lime trees, is a feast for the eyes. If you’re out walking here, keep your eyes out for the house fronts, as they will often indicate their former function. If you follow the narrow alleyways off the main street, known locally as slopjes, you’ll be able to explore what goes on behind the scenes in this delightful village. Signs along the way will indicate who once lived here.
